One of the driving forces for this endeavor to find free software to produce a high quality website was to move forward without any unnecessary expense. One alternative that has proven very effective and efficient with internet access is using a Chromebook. I have found the Acer C720 Chromebook to be suited very well to be an economical internet access workhorse. And the Chromebook price tag, even for a nice one, is less than $250.
Chromebooks use Chrome OS though. And as of this writing the applications that run under Chrome are limited, though perhaps barely adequate for website preparation and the like. But there is a little (free) trick that can make a Chromebook that will rival a Windows Laptop without buying a lot of add on software, but a system that will work for college paper preparation and handle all of the latest tasks watching videos and playing music and games.
Enter Bodhi Linux. It’s free, aside from the time a user invests in the learning curve. It’s pretty. And it has Libre Office (free) that works every bit as good as Microsoft products that cost hundreds of dollars. It also permits the installation of Chrome, which restores the Chromebook to its original purpose in life. And there are a ton of free applications that make the Chromebook into a real laptop machine. Oh, and did I say it looks pretty?
