I’ve tried another Linux Distribution on my Chromebook and it is more sophisticated than Bodhi though perhaps not quite as pretty. It is called KDE using a Plasma desktop. It is very configurable, and if you want, it can be set up similar enough to a Windows desktop so it won’t scare away non-geek users.

The best part is you can run it using an installation method utilizing what is called “Crouton”.  In this manner you can have your cake and eat it too. That is to say you can run your Chromebook with the Chrome OS, or alternately, with a three-key combination, you can switch to KDE Linux with a Plasma desktop.

KDE can use the Synaptic software manager which is familiar to most every flavor of a Linux. And with that it is a small matter to load in the Libre Office Suite Along with all the other free software to make your Chromebook into a fully functional laptop. I’ve tried it for a month and a half now without so much as a glitch. Very nice.

The version of KDE I installed came with Firefox as an alternative web browser. I used it to download Chrome which I then set add my default browser. From there you can download free Chrome apps and extensions from the Chrome app store, and you end up with a very nice system.  Free.
